Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!!
Posted by Tony & Cheri on January 15, 2009
We were wandering over to La Pesca for dinner tonight when we passed a truck caravan of nine tigers, one double-humped camel and a big brown bear parked at Mega. That of course can mean only one thing…THE CIRCUS IS IN TOWN!!!!!
Sometimes life in Mexico can be a lot like 1950s America. Each year a circus trucks into town with wild animals, rides and all the cotton candy you can eat. This year it’s the circus of Francisco Atayde Garcia, a well known Mexican circus, which was supposedly started in Mazatlan 120 years ago. Okay, enough history. THE CIRCUS IS IN TOWN!!!! The advance crew (okay, one guy, Martin) was selling tickets in the Mega parking lot for $30 pesos, so we bought some. This will be our first Mexican circus (every day here’s a bit of a circus, but that’s another story!) as we’ve managed to miss it the past few years, so we’re excited.
The circus will be across the highway, supposedly somewhere near Constituyentes and Avenida 115. Of course like so many other things in Mexico, we’re expecting to drive in that general direction next week and just follow the crowds.
It starts tomorrow, Thursday January 15 (or more likely Friday because of rain, according to Martin) and will last “two or three weeks.” Nothing is ever exact here.
The tickets say there will be shows at 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm on Monday through Friday; Saturday at 4:00 pm, 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm; and Sunday at noon, 4:00 pm, 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. We’re guessing and hoping there will also be a carnival along with the circus.
We’ll probably go on Monday night & will most likely blog about our adventures on Wednesday or Thursday.
