Cinco de Mayo Party at the Luna Blue Bar!

Posted by Tony & Cheri on April 25, 2009

Cinco de Mayo Party at the Luna Blue BarEvery spring since we’ve lived in Mexico, we’ve heard tourists ask the same question, “What’s happening in Playa for Cinco de Mayo?” The answer is usually: nothing. Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday in Mexico, celebrated primarily in the town of Puebla, as it marks the victory of the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Mexicans in other parts of the country see it as just another day. No parties, no nada. In fact, when you describe the American version of Cinco de Mayo to most local Mexicans here, they look at you with that look that can only mean one thing: “crazy gringo!”

However, as most Americans know, Cinco de Mayo is recognized in the United States and other parts of the world as a day to celebrate the culture and experiences of people of Mexican ancestry, much as St. Patrick’s Day and the Chinese New Year are used to celebrate those of Irish and Chinese ancestry. Like those other holidays, Cinco de Mayo is observed by people of all ethnic origins, with the largest celebrations being held in the US. In other words, it’s generally seen by gringos as an excuse for a huge Mexican-themed party and for Corona to sell a whole lot of beer.

Okay, so here we are: gringos in Mexico. Who better than us to celebrate a gringo holiday???

So…if you’re in Playa del Carmen on Tuesday May 5 (that’s “Cinco de Mayo” in Spanish :)), stop by the Luna Blue Bar for some Cinco de Mayo fun! We’re going to have live music by the amazing singer/guitarist Mike Grabow; 2 x 1 margaritas; cheeseburgers (Mexican style, of course); goodies & giveaways and special appearances by Ginger our beautiful bikini shot girl and Lenny the Wonder Dog!

So what if the local Mexicans think we’re crazy?? It should be a great time!

    Hola Tony and Cheri,
I´m a newcomer to your blog and am finding it super informative for my visit in Playa del Carmen. I just arrived in Playa yesterday and am still getting my bearings. Í´m doing a Spanish immersion school program for 2 weeks so, I definitely want to join in at your Cinco de Mayo party. Also, would love to stop by and introduce myself to you sometime before then.
    Ciao for now
