More Than Just Happy Hour….

Posted by Tony & Cheri on April 15, 2011

It's 5 o'clock somewhereThings are starting to slow down a little bit here in Playa del Carmen. The fast pace and the large crowds of the high season are disappearing as many of the snowbirds head home (probably to late spring blizzards!!!).

The locals can now find a seat at their favorite bar and a place on the beach. And travelers in the know will find less crowds and lower prices. Spring is a great time to be in paradise.

To celebrate our favorite time of year we are starting our own version of happy hour at the Luna Blue Bar.

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 4-8 pm we will have $20 peso beers, 2 x 1 house margaritas, and free chips and salsa.

As usual we will have Radio Margaritaville playing via satellite. And as an added bonus, Jimmy Buffett’s live performances will be broadcast on many of those nights!

And as always, any chicas contributing a thong to the bar’s collection will receive a free shot of our best tequila. It’s a tradition. 🙂

Cheap beer and ’ritas, snacks and a front row swing to hear Jimmy’s concerts. We don’t call it happy hour…we call it the “Buffett Buffet at the Blue.”

It all starts next Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the Luna Blue Bar and continues throughout the spring and summer.

Stop on by and you’ll say–in the words of Playa’s popular singer/songwriter Mike Grabow–the Luna Blue is “Where I Want to Be”.

Nibble Your Way Through Mexico…at Taste of Playa

Posted by Tony & Cheri on November 16, 2010

Sex on the BarHow would you like to eat and drink at dozens of different restaurants and bars…all in one afternoon? No, you don’t have to race around town from place to place ordering meals and beverages until you burst. Instead you can spend the day enjoying the special tasting menus offered by 40 restaurants and bars at the 2010 Taste of Playa food and drink festival.

The Taste of Playa
This year’s annual Taste of Playa culinary festival has gathered together some of the most popular and critically acclaimed eateries and bars in all the Riviera Maya. From 3-9 pm this coming Sunday, November 21, 2010 they will be offering incredible samples of some of their signature dishes and drinks to the hungry public. This year among those offering a taste of their best will be our own Luna Blue Bar!

As most regular readers of our blog know, in addition to operating one of the Mayan Rivera’s favorite hotels, we also run our own little bit of “Margaritaville”-style paradise called the Luna Blue Bar. We designed “The Blue” (as we affectionately call it) to reflect our dream of what a tropical bar should be.

The Luna Blue Hotel Bar
We have swings instead of stools around the bar, a palm thatched roof overhead and a deck overlooking our cenote/waterfall garden. We have local musicians play in the bar a couple of nights a week, and play satellite radio (Caliente Latin, Reggae and Radio Margaritaville) the rest of the time. Occasionally we will have fresh bunches of bananas and coconuts from our garden piled up for people to enjoy. And hanging from the rafters are dozens of thongs and g-strings…traded by lady visitors for a shot of tequila and the chance to leave a little of themselves behind at “The Blue.” It makes quite the sight.

Like any great tropical bar we have our own versions of some of the most popular “umbrella drinks”…like Papa T’s Margarita and the Playa Colada. We also have our own special recipes that stand out as something unique and different. We will be offering tastes of two of the most popular of those signature drinks this Sunday at Taste of Playa: The “Sarita-B-Careful” margarita and the “Sex on the Bar” cocktail.

The Sarita B Careful Margarita
When we first moved to Mexico and met our dear friend (more like a daughter) Sarah, she would entertain us with her stories of partying late into the night and dancing on the bars around town. The only problem was that after a drink or two our girl would be too tipsy to keep her balance and would invariably tumble off the bar with resulting scrapes and bruises. We were always telling her…”Sarita, be careful!”

We remembered those stories when we came up with our very first signature drink and decided to name it in honor of our sweet but clumsy friend. The Sarita B Careful is a sugar rimmed margarita on the rocks featuring pomegranate infused tequila. It is tart, with just the perfect balance of sweetness. Sarah, by the way, has retired from bar dancing, is happily married to a wonderful guy and has a beautiful new daughter. If you come to the Taste of Playa this Sunday you can taste the drink named for her.

Sex on the Bar–the cocktail
When our bartender Jorge first came up with this new drink recipe, we had some taste testing at the bar to see what people thought. Everyone raved about it, and one guest laughingly proclaimed, “This is better than sex!” With that kind of inspiration it didn’t take us long to come up with a name. The drink is as good as the name promises… a combination of sweet tropical fruit juices, hibiscus flower-infused tequila and almond-flavored liqueur. It may not be better than sex…but it’s darn close.

When we thought about how to promote this “sexy” drink, our good friend Renata came to mind. Renata is often a featured guest at our holiday parties where she appears in brightly colored bikinis to help serve drinks, hand out gifts and pose for pictures. She is always a hit with the crowd. So we asked her to help us advertise our new cocktail. The result is a series of “Sex on the Bar” posters which will be available for purchase at our Taste of Playa booth. Stop by for a taste, and then take a little “Sex on the Bar” home with you.

The 2010 Taste of Playa is a not-to-be-missed event and will be held at Parque Fundadores (5th Avenue and Juarez) between 3 pm and 9 pm on Sunday November 21. VIP pass holders will be allowed entrance at 2 pm. “Playa Pesos” will be on sale at the event for 10 pesos each and will be used to purchase “tastes” from each restaurant and bar, with most costing either 1 or 2 Playa Pesos. You will be amazed at the array of foods and drinks which will be offered for tasting. And make sure to stop by the Luna Blue Bar booth to say hi and try one of our special cocktails. See you there!

A special note: Yesterday morning there was a terrible incident here in Playa when a gas explosion at a large resort outside of town killed several people and injured several more. At this time authorities are investigating possible causes, including the build up of natural gas under the building or perhaps a faulty gas tank. Many people who love Playa are already offering condolences and prayers to those, both visitors and locals, who were victims of this event.

Sadly, some people are using this tragedy as an excuse to once again denigrate Mexico and warn people not to visit here. Such comments now circulating around the internet are simply the result of ignorance and/or bigotry. We urge you to condemn such stupid remarks and to join us in offering our prayers and best wishes to the victims and there families. All of us in Playa are greatly saddened by this tragic accident. We hope the injured recover quickly and that the families of those who died will find some peace.

Recommended Reading: A Great Guidebook

Posted by Tony & Cheri on January 24, 2009

Click here to see 'Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya by Joshua Eden Hinsdale' on Amazon.comWhen we first bought the hotel, we didn’t know a thing about marketing. We naively thought it was just a case of writing or calling up companies that published guidebooks and telling them we were open for business. Haha! We quickly found out that’s not the way it works.

Getting mentioned in a guidebook can be difficult. If you’re not already a known entity (which we weren’t) you might not be mentioned because there’s only so much space in a book and the writers already have their favorites. And, even if the book is updated, you may have to get on a waiting list for a couple of years to be mentioned.

We also discovered that reviews of hotels in the travel writing industry sometimes are the result of the hotel’s “generosity” to the reviewer. Many large hotels finance press junkets and pay for rooms, airfare, food and other perks for travel writers. We had two problems with that. First it seemed kinda phony that you could buy a good review in a travel book and secondly…we couldn’t afford it. So we resigned ourselves to the fact that we wouldn’t get much mention in the world of guidebook publishing.

However, in the early days of the Luna Blue Hotel we had a young travel writer stop by to look at our hotel. Joshua Eden Hinsdale was working on a guidebook for the Riviera Maya with an emphasis on Playa del Carmen. Josh had lived in the area for many years, was active in the travel industry, and knew his way around the Mayan Riviera. He was enthusiastic about spreading the word that Playa was the hottest place to travel and wanted his guidebook to be as up to date and detailed as it could be. He wanted visitors to have the same insider information that locals have. Best of all, he wasn’t looking for a handout or compensation; he just wanted to write the best guidebook possible.

We spent a lovely afternoon talking with Josh. Several months later a guest in the hotel showed us a copy of his newly printed book, “Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya: A Complete Guide” published as part of the Great Destinations guidebook series. In our opinion, it was everything Josh had said it would be. We were especially happy that he had done a very complimentary review of the Luna Blue Hotel. It was our first guidebook mention! We even stole one of his quotes from the review to use on our website: “The Luna Blue Hotel…has a lost in time quality that’s not easy to find in a modern resort destination.”

Over the next couple of years we couldn’t count the number of people who have shown up at our front desk with his book in hand. It obviously has been a real help for visitors to Playa del Carmen.

Then, last year, Josh stopped by again. He explained he was updating his guidebook and wanted to see what was new with the hotel and get our feedback on changes, improvements and additions to Playa del Carmen in general. He also asked if he could interview us for a sidebar inclusion in the book. Oh yeah, twist our arms! We spent a pleasant couple of hours with Josh sitting in the garden next to the waterfall and talking about one of our favorite subjects, Playa del Carmen.

Fast forward to today. This morning some guests in the hotel came to the front desk with a copy of the new 2nd Edition of Joshua’s guidebook which they had brought for us. (We have the nicest guests!!) We just finished leafing through it and have to say it’s even better than the first one. The information is detailed in a way that most guidebooks aren’t. It offers specifics about where to go, what to do, how to get there and how much to pay.

But what makes this book really special and different is the insider commentary about things in Playa del Carmen that visitors often don’t see or hear about. Joshua talks about our famous fire department, the Bomberos, and tells people how they can help support it. He offers a long list of items that are needed by the local Playa del Carmen Children and Family Services Department with information about where to bring such items. He also peppers the book with entertaining commentaries such as the “Top 10 Songs to Load on your iPod” before coming to Playa (Margaritaville tops the list of course); suggestions for walking tours and stories about Mayan history and myth. He even does a review of local “adult” clubs with pricing information! There are plenty of maps and lots of photos. He also tells the reader about other sources of local information, including the website www.intheroo.com which he notes is “favored by many locals.” (We might have put in a good word. 😉 )

Of course our favorite pages are 142, 143 and 192. It’s here you can find favorable reviews of the Luna Blue Hotel & Garden, the Luna Blue Bar (which he recommends) and almost a full page story about us which he called “Living the Dream.” It was pretty cool to see that. Now we’re just waiting for someone to purchase the movie rights. 🙂 🙂

So if you’re going to be coming to Playa del Carmen soon or just want a book to take you there on a cold South Dakota winter’s night (that’s for you, Tim & Ruth), pick up a copy or order it from Amazon.com and make the mailman trudge thru the snow with your copy. We think you’ll like it.

****
Here’s an excerpt from the book that shows Joshua’s spot on attitude about traveling south of the border:

It May be Paradise, but it’s Still the Jungle

Don’t forget, even though Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya are exotic and wonderful beach vacation destinations, they are still relatively undeveloped and are in close proximity to the jungle, and you should set your expectations accordingly. You should also remember that there are hassles and frustrations inherent to any travel situation. You’re on vacation to have fun and celebrate life, so try not to let little challenges you encounter bother you.

If a chicken walks into your beachfront restaurant and pecks at your crumbs, don’t get mad–take a picture. If a gecko streaks across the wall of your hotel room, don’t call the front desk–give him a name and consider him a pet. If your shower runs out of hot water, don’t complain to the concierge–it’s good for your sunburn. And most importantly, if you find yourself at odds with your travel partner, it’s time to hit the nearest bar, order a margarita, feel the warm breeze, and remember why you came here in the first place.

Jimmy Buffett’s Back at the Luna Blue Bar!

Posted by Tony & Cheri on July 13, 2008

Parrotheads Party!!!

It’s about time. Jimmy Buffett has had his summer vacation break and, starting this Thursday, he is back on the road with the Coral Reefer Band and the lovely Reeferettes. Of course all of Jimmy’s roads lead to Playa Del Carmen via Radio Margaritaville’s satellite concert broadcasts. And as always, every time Jimmy is performing somewhere…anywhere…we will be playing the concert live at the Luna Blue Bar.

Our Luna Blue Bar-Jimmy Buffett Live Concert-Parrothead Parties were a great success in June and figure to be just as much fun for the second half of Jimmy’s “The Year of Still Here” tour. You can see a little bit of one of our Parrothead parties in the following video, courtesy of our friends at Playatube.com.

So starting July 17th we will again be having our Parrothead gatherings. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in July the Luna Blue Bar will have “Dos por Uno” (Two for One) House Margaritas, the best cheeseburgers in paradise grilled bar-side by Papa T, prizes, giveaways and best of all, Jimmy playing and singing LIVE for your pleasure. All the parties in July start at 7:00 pm. In the weeks to come, look for some special happenings, including the Dos Equis XX girls as guest bartenders (dates to be announced…watch here for details!). And remember…if Jimmy EVER utters the words “Playa Del Carmen” during a concert…it’s tequila for the house on us!

So deck yourself out in your best, funniest, sexiest Parrothead attire (or come as you are), and bring that giant thirst for a boat drink down to the Luna Blue Bar. The Gypsies are in the Castle tonight. Fins Up!

Jimmy Buffett Concert at the Luna Blue Bar

Posted by Tony & Cheri on May 11, 2008

Ha! Made you look! 🙂

The Bar at the Luna BlueWe’ve always been big Jimmy Buffett fans. His music, books and concerts were a huge inspiration to us when we decided to run away to the tropics and buy the Luna Blue Hotel & Garden in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. And when we decided to build our own tropical bar, images of “Margaritaville” (the dream, not the restaurants) danced in our heads. We tried to build a bar that was our idea of what a little bar in paradise should be. So we built a palm thatched roof over a bar surrounded by swings, not stools. We placed it on a deck overlooking a garden filled with tropical flowers, hammocks and a waterfall.

Okay, perfect, we thought. But what about tunes?? We spent a lot of time loading our ipod and searching itunes and came up with some good ideas. But then we realized the answer was right in front of us: the perfect soundtrack to living in Margaritaville is Radio Margaritaville. Yes, it has lots of Buffett, which we like. But it also plays other great musicians associated with living or vacationing in “someplace hot.” The Neville Brothers, Bob Marley, Steven Marley, lots of other Marleys, Kenny Chesney, Marcia Ball, Willie Nelson can all be heard there. The sounds run from pop to soul to reggae to blues–just about anything you’d want to hear while laying on a beach with a cold one in your hand. And we’ve had a soft spot in our hearts for Radio Margaritaville ever since last fall when they broadcast our plea to help the victims of Hurricane Dean in Mahahual, Mexico.

So we bought a Sirius satellite radio, climbed precariously to the top of the highest part of the hotel to install the antenna, hung the speakers from the rafters and threw the switch. It started a party that has continued ever since.

Last week, while standing in the front row at the edge of the stage for Jimmy Buffett’s performance at Jazz Fest in New Orleans (yes, a trip report will be coming soon), we came up with a fun idea for the bar. Since all of Jimmy’s concerts are broadcast live on Radio Margaritaville, we thought we would bring the party to Playa del Carmen by way of satellite. So…..during every Buffett concert this summer, our legendary bartender Jose will be pouring 2 for 1 margaritas to the accompaniment of Jimmy’s live concert!

Jimmy Buffett, live at Jazz Fest, New Orleans 2008All of Jimmy’s concerts are Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays. The Luna Blue Jimmy Buffett Concert Hours start as listed below, Central Time (aka Playa del Carmen time).
