More Than Just Happy Hour….

Posted by Tony & Cheri on April 15, 2011

It's 5 o'clock somewhereThings are starting to slow down a little bit here in Playa del Carmen. The fast pace and the large crowds of the high season are disappearing as many of the snowbirds head home (probably to late spring blizzards!!!).

The locals can now find a seat at their favorite bar and a place on the beach. And travelers in the know will find less crowds and lower prices. Spring is a great time to be in paradise.

To celebrate our favorite time of year we are starting our own version of happy hour at the Luna Blue Bar.

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 4-8 pm we will have $20 peso beers, 2 x 1 house margaritas, and free chips and salsa.

As usual we will have Radio Margaritaville playing via satellite. And as an added bonus, Jimmy Buffett’s live performances will be broadcast on many of those nights!

And as always, any chicas contributing a thong to the bar’s collection will receive a free shot of our best tequila. It’s a tradition. 🙂

Cheap beer and ’ritas, snacks and a front row swing to hear Jimmy’s concerts. We don’t call it happy hour…we call it the “Buffett Buffet at the Blue.”

It all starts next Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the Luna Blue Bar and continues throughout the spring and summer.

Stop on by and you’ll say–in the words of Playa’s popular singer/songwriter Mike Grabow–the Luna Blue is “Where I Want to Be.”

Halloween at the Luna Blue…How Wicked do YOU Want to Be?

Posted by Tony & Cheri on October 6, 2010

The spirit-world around this world of sense
Floats like an atmosphere, and everywhere
Wafts through these earthly mists and vapours dense
A vital breath of more ethereal air.
        ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Halloween is coming!

A wonderful night of masking under the moon and letting the darker spirits come forth. And once again the Haunted Garden of the Luna Boo will be celebrating Halloween in all its delightful wickedness with Playa’s wildest party.

We will have music with TWO of Playa’s favorite musicians: Barefoot Skinny (before he heads down to Belize) and Mike Grabow (just back from his triumphant tour of the Northlands). And who knows what local musical spirits may appear to join?

There will be costume contests galore with prizes for: Best Men’s costume, Best Women’s costume, Best Group costume, Papa T’s Favorite costume and…Wickedest costume! How wicked do YOU want to be?

And speaking of wicked, we will be unveiling our newest and most outrageous drink yet…
“Sex on the Bar.” Created by our own Jorge Sierra (Playa’s favorite bartender) this new cocktail is a fascinating combination of sweet and sour with a lingering flavor that will put a smile on your face. It is sure to be a Playa classic, and you can be among the first to try it.

There will be food (Papa T’s Boo Burgers), gift giveaways, surprise guests, Halloween candy for trick-or-treaters, and lots of surprises. And most of all there will be the wild spirits of Playa holding forth in all their power from 6pm until the witching hour of midnight.

And if you need a place to stay, we have just three rooms left so hurry to make your reservation.

Halloween, October 31st, 2010 from 6pm to midnight…at the Luna Blue Bar, Calle 26 between 5th & 10th Avenue, Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Nobody throws a party like the Luna Blue.

InkFest 2010…a Celebration of Body Art

Posted by Tony & Cheri on May 14, 2010

Awhile back, we heard about a review on TripAdvisor by a woman who said she disliked Playa del Carmen (which seems to actually have been just the giant all-inclusive resort outside of town where she stayed) because it was filled with “loud, tattooed tourists.” We laughed hysterically. She was describing us and the people we like! We do have tattoos ourselves-Tony has his left forearm covered with a Buddhist haiku in the original Japanese Kanji lettering, and on his right arm he has a large iguana whose shadow is created by a Mayan sun. Cheri has a small heart with devil horns and pointed tail on her…uh…lower…uh… “back”. 🙂

Our first thought on reading this was how sad that people can be so judgmental over something as harmless and personal as a tattoo. And how unfair to condemn a resort, a town or any location based on other visitors being different. In our mind that is one of the great reasons to travel…to be exposed to people and experiences you might otherwise never get to know. That’s also why we tend to avoid large all-inclusive hotels when we travel. We figure why stay in the same style room, eating the same style of food with people who are just like us when we can go have an adventure?

Then Cheri said, “Hey, we LOVE loud, tattooed tourists! Let’s invite them to our place!” And that’s what we decided to do. We would have a party at our bar for tattooed tourists. And so was born InkFest 2010.

InkFest 2010 at the Luna Blue Hotel & Bar was a bar party with something more. It had live music of course (our friend and Luna Blue house musician Mike Grabow), along with some freebies ( a free shot of tequila for anyone with a tattoo). We also invited Playa’s legendary tattoo shop, ScreamInk to bring down some art work and talk to people about tattoos. But best of all we decided to show our appreciation for those “loud tattooed tourists” by giving them prizes. We had a tattoo contest with awards for Biggest Tattoo, Sexiest Tattoo, Most Tattoos and Best Tattoo.

When we announced InkFest we had no idea how many people would come or be willing to show off their bodies to a crowd. As it turns out…a lot of people liked the idea. We were packed with people of every size, age, color, and nationality. We had twenty-somethings and sixty-plus retirees. We had both men and women with tattoos. We had people with tiny flowers on their feet and people with whole worlds etched on their back. And every part of the body you can imagine (well, almost every part) was used as a canvas for someone’s ink.

Judging was done by Cheri, our friend Carole LoBue and Peanut Pet Shelter Director Andy MacDonald. The judges worked very hard and saw a lot of tattoos. In fact, when shirtless buff young men showed their art, our lady judges were very attentive and often required a closer look! LOL!

As the evening wore on, more and more people strutted their stuff and showed their body art. Some wanted one of our great prizes which ranged from discounts on tattoos (donated by ScreamInk) to bar tabs at the Luna Blue bar and a grand prize of $2000 pesos towards a new tattoo. Other folks just wanted the pleasure of showing their ink and having people admire their art. It could not have been a friendlier, more open, more willing to share a group of people. Exactly the type of people we like. Or, what some might call…”loud, tattooed tourists” 🙂

InkFest was so popular we will certainly do it again next year. So if you don’t have a tat yet…you have 12 months to get one. For some inspiration on how beautiful a tattoo can be, here are photos of some of the great people who were part of Inkfest 2010. See you next year!

BTW, InkFest was broadcast live over the internet thanks to our friend Rick Cole. Our future parties may also end up in a live webcast. Become a fan of the Luna Blue Hotel and Bar on Facebook to receive notices and details when we do have special events.

And remember: travel should be an adventure!

Local tattoo shop, ScreamInk, provided many of the prizes for InkFest 2010

Emma Waddell, winner of the Best Overall Tattoo contest, with her tribute to the movie Pink Flamingos. Her tattoo has a portrait of director John Waters, Divine, Mink Stole & a pink flamingo.

This tattoo, located in a very private spot, was only seen by a few. Its owner was too shy to enter the contests.

Party through Spring and Summer at the Luna Blue Bar

Posted by Tony & Cheri on May 3, 2010

With the end of spring and the start of summer, the calendar of events and happenings at the Luna Blue Hotel and Luna Blue Bar is beginning to fill up. Lots of parties and fun things are planned:

Luna Blue Bar Happenings for May 2010

On May 5 we will be celebrating America’s favorite Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, with 2 for 1 margaritas, fun giveaways and the traditional music of Mexico. The party starts at 7:00 pm.

On May 7 we are proud to host the Peanut Pet Shelter “Another Brick in the Wall” Party. The Pet Shelter is once again giving away a holiday for two here in Playa del Carmen. This includes FREE FLIGHTS…. FREE AIRPORT TRANSFERS…AND A WEEK STAY AT VILLA BALAM. CLICK HERE to find out how to buy a brick and help build the new pet shelter clinic (and become eligible for the fantastic thank you gift of a FREE trip to Playa del Carmen). The party starts at 7:00 pm with live music by Mike Grabow starting at 8:00 pm.

On May 9 our friend A’ndrea Houston is hosting “Another Playa Bar Crawl.” About 90 of A’ndrea’s closest friends will be cruising the bars of Playa that night (be afraid!) and will be starting the festivities at the Luna Blue Bar. The bar opens at 3:00 pm and the Bar Crawl kicks off around 8:30. There will be music and surprises and fun. What better way to start a party night in Playa than at the Luna Blue?

On May 11 we will be hosting our own InkFest 2010 party, celebrating the art of tattoos. Anyone with a tattoo on display (which means uncovered for viewing…regardless of where it is located!) will receive a free shot of tequila from our lovely Bikini Shot girl. There will also be a tattoo contest with prizes for the best, the sexiest, the biggest, the most tattoos etc. And of course we will have live music with Mike Grabow, drink specials and all the usual craziness of a Luna Blue party.

Luna Blue Bar Happenings for June 2010

On June 4 the Peanut Pet Shelter and many Playa peeps are having a “Yappy Hour Peep Meet and Party” starting at 7:00 pm. There will be 2×1 margaritas, Papa T’s famous burgers (with proceeds to the Peanut Pet Shelter), live music and plenty of fun. Stop by and meet the folks from the Pet Shelter and some of the peeps that you always wanted to see in person.

On June 10, Sadie Elizabeth Infante will arrive in Playa for the first time. 🙂

On June 11 we are starting a new tradition here at the Luna Blue with our “1st Annual Rainbow Celebration.” June 11 is the anniversary of the day Mexico banned discrimination based on, among other things, sexual orientation or preference. The Luna Blue will proudly display the rainbow flag, the international symbol for tolerance and gay pride. Come and join us in celebrating the value of everyone’s life and love.

Luna Blue Bar Happenings for May 2010

We will also be playing the live Radio Margaritaville satellite broadcast of Jimmy Buffett’s concerts on May 15, 17, 20 and 22, and June 17, 19 and 26. Get 2 x 1 margaritas and swing beneath our newly-expanded palm frond roof while listening to Jimmy in paradise.

And as usual, every Tuesday and Friday night you can hear the great Mike Grabow sing about where he wants to be as Lenny the Wonder Dog races through the crowd and girls in bikinis sip free margaritas.

If you are in Playa del Carmen, stop by the Luna Blue Bar. Paradise doesn’t get much better than this.

Halloween at the Luna Blue 2009

Posted by Tony & Cheri on October 20, 2009

It’s that time of year again….when untamed spirits roam the night, joining in wild, uncontrolled gatherings of reckless abandon beneath the full moon.

In other words, it’s time for the

Luna Blue Bar - Poster Halloween 2009

This year we have pulled out all the stops. Musician MIKE GRABOW will be returning to the Luna Blue Bar that night. Mike’s mellow music and easygoing style has long been a hit with visitors and locals alike and we are thrilled to have him back.

And while you are listening to Mike sing, why not take advantage of our 2 X 1 MARGARITAS? People say our bartender Jorge makes some of the best…and strongest…margaritas around.

We will also be grilling up Papa T’s famous “BOO BURGERS” that night. Cheeseburgers with all the trimmings and a little Cajun spice added to ward off evil spirits!

This night will also be a chance to buy a PEANUT PET SHELTER REFRIGERATOR MAGNET! On November 13 one lucky person will have his name drawn from all those who bought a magnet and be given the fabulous thank you gift of a week-long stay in Playa Del Carmen…FREE. Airfare, meals, tours, transportation, and a stay at the award-winning LUNA BLUE HOTEL will all be part of this wonderful gift. So make sure to pick up a magnet or three at the party. Anyone buying a magnet that night gets a FREE shot of tequila and a FREE copy of the poster pictured here!

And what’s a Halloween Party without COSTUME CONTESTS? We are having not one, not two, but three contests that night. There will be CASH prizes for the Best Guy’s Costume, for the Best Girl’s Costume and one more for the WICKEDEST Costume of the night (your own good taste is the only restriction)!

The bar opens at 3:00, the 2 X 1 drink specials start at 7:00, the music starts at 8:00, the COSTUME CONTESTS begin at 9:30 and the party goes until the witching hour of MIDNIGHT.

There will be even more surprises, giveaways, and fun stuff so make sure and stop by the LUNA BLUE BAR HALLOWEEN FANTASY COSTUME PARTY. Saturday, October 31st. On Calle 26 between 5th and 10th Avenues. You only have to ask yourself…
